Odys cheap HD camcorders
Posted by Charbax on March 14th, 2008
Odys distributes some really nice looking cheap HD camcorders. The cheapest HD camcorder is actually below 100 euros. You can watch sample HD videos filmed using this camcorder here:
Sample video 1 filmed using the Odys MC-HD800 (27mb)
Sample video 2 filmed using the Odys MDV-HD8 (14mb)
This interview was filmed using the Sanyo HD1000.

I’m very amazed of that tiny camcorder that seems to take shots in full HD (does it actually)?
And especially it comes with a tiny price. Unfortunatly it’s not available everywhere. I’ve just seen it on a german sites (pearl.de).
Charbax, can the MC-HD800 really compete with a sanyo HD 1000? Or with a HD2?

I think the Odys ones are manufactured by Chicony, so you might be able to find them in other places than Germany and Europe with slightly different designs possibly or just different brands. I think these ones produce really impressively good HD video quality for the price. As you can hear though, sound quality is still bad. The day one of those cheap camcorders incorporate a audio mini-jack input for an external microphone, and that this would be tested to provide good sound recordings, then I’d say these could definitely replace more expensive camcorders by Sony, Panasonic, Canon and the best currently available in my opinion the Sanyo ones.

Sure the quality of the optics does not compare with a Sanyo HD1000, but it’s not too far from it, and panning quality seems good from the samples.
I will post more samples from other HD camcorder manufacturers soon. I’ve still got 13 videos to publish from CeBIT.

I got this camcorder today. First impressions were great. Lot’s of small features. But… ( yeah, had to be a “but”
) I’m cluless as to how you got that quality on your sample. I’m getting some insane grain. The camcorder seems fine, lens is clear no scratches. Did you convert your sample somehow? I checked all the setting on the camcorder - all look fine. Any clues?
