Frank-Thomas Buechler, Pre-Sales Consultant for Alcatel-Lucent is talking about their suggestion for a digital TV system for mobile devices. It works by a combination of using the existing 3G antennas by simply adding a DVB-SH box to these, as well as combining that with a DVB-SH satellite that covers a whole continent. This would provide countinent-wide up to 96 TV channels be it with a direct line of sight to the satellite or when in densely populated areas with roofs and tall buidlings, then in the proximity of a 3G cell tower. The TV channels are to be broadcast at around 256kbit/s, which is suitable for use on mobile devices such as Archos and mobile phones. DVB-SH will launch in the beginning of 2008 using the terrestrial 3G antennas in Europe, followed by the planned launch of the satellite covering the whole of Europe by the end of 2008. USA will also be getting DVB-SH soon. How this will supplement DVB-H, DVB-T and if it will need to compete or supplement UHF-based data networks such as WiMax, 3G and HSDPA, this is to be seen how this folds out within the next couple of years.
